Becoming a doctor in Zambia is a long but well-defined path. Here's the general shape of it, so you know what to expect before you're deep into any one stage.
The general pathway
1. Strong science grades at Grade 12. Medical schools require strong passes in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics at Grade 12 level — this is the first filter, so these subjects deserve early, serious attention.
2. Apply to a medical school. Zambia's main public option is the University of Zambia's School of Medicine, alongside other universities that have since introduced medical programs — admission is competitive and grade-driven.
3. Complete the medical degree. The undergraduate medical degree (typically referred to as MBChB) generally takes around 6-7 years, combining classroom study with clinical rotations in hospitals during the later years.
4. Internship. After graduating, new doctors complete a supervised internship year (sometimes longer) at an accredited hospital before being allowed to practice independently.
5. Register with the regulator. Practicing legally requires registration with the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ), which licenses and regulates medical practitioners in the country.
6. Specialize, if you choose to. Many doctors then pursue further specialization (surgery, pediatrics, and so on) through postgraduate training programs, either in Zambia or abroad.
