Mobile money has become the fastest way to move cash in Zambia, whether you're paying a vendor, sending money to family, or settling a bill — no bank account required.
What you'll need
- An active SIM card registered in your name
- A registered mobile money wallet with your network (MTN Money, Airtel Money, or Zamtel Kwacha)
- Sufficient balance, plus a small transaction fee
Steps
1. Register your wallet. Dial your network's mobile money USSD code (check your provider's current code) and follow the prompts to register with your NRC details.
2. Load funds. Visit a registered mobile money agent and deposit cash into your wallet, or receive a transfer from someone else.
3. Send money. Dial the USSD code, select 'Send Money', enter the recipient's phone number and the amount, then confirm with your PIN.
4. Keep the confirmation. You'll receive an SMS confirming the transaction — keep it until the recipient confirms they've received the funds.
5. Cash out if needed. The recipient can withdraw the cash at any agent by presenting their phone and NRC.
